Jeep introduced the Cherokee in the 1970s, after deciding to take the four-wheel drive Wagoneer into an entirely different direction. The resulting Cherokee left the station wagon designation behind to become one of the first models ever referred to as a sport utility vehicle. The original Cherokee debuted with two doors and a spacious cabin, and a four-door model came along in 1977.
Building on the Wagoneer’s family-friendly appeal, the Cherokee packaged trip-long comfort and contemporary design, and these qualities became signature features in the SUV by the debut of its second generation in 1984. During that period, other makers took note of the Cherokee’s immense popularity and began designing SUVs of their own. Even with the increasing market competition, the Cherokee remained a popular choice among American drivers.
Jeep later used the Cherokee as the basis for another SUV, the Grand Cherokee. The standard Cherokee was briefly rebranded as the Jeep Liberty though the 2000s, but returned to its original nameplate in 2014. By that time, the SUV had also been equipped with modern technology like satellite radio, traction control, and a navigation system.
