New Jeep Cherokee at Firkins CDJR in Bradenton, FL

What’s New in the 2021 Jeep Cherokee?

Jeep has issued several new standard features for the 2021 Cherokee, and now the base model comes with heated exterior mirrors as well as more safety tools like automatic emergency braking and lane keep assist. To commemorate eight decades on the road, the Cherokee is also available in the 80th Anniversary Edition. Based on the Latitude trim, this variation comes with a panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery with contrast stitching, and more.

The Cherokee offers confident control whether you’re on streets, highways, or an unpredictable landscape, combining the class’ smooth ride with off-roading prowess that leaves its rivals behind. If you like to rumble off-road often, consider the brawny Trailhawk trim, which comes with enhanced four-wheel drive and specialized suspension. The standard model features a 180-horsepower 4-cylinder engine, while you can also opt for a 270-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder or the 271-horsepower V6. When optimized for trailering, the Cherokee can tow up to 4,500 pounds.

To balance its hearty athleticism, the Cherokee presents a comfortable interior with ample space for you and your crew. Both rows are cushioned for a relaxed ride, and everyone will enjoy plenty of legroom no matter where they sit. When you have younger passengers riding along, you can secure their car seats with two sets of LATCH connections in the back row. Quality materials abound, with available upgrades like heated seating, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a heated steering wheel for added comfort.

History of the Jeep Cherokee

Jeep introduced the Cherokee in the 1970s, after deciding to take the four-wheel drive Wagoneer into an entirely different direction. The resulting Cherokee left the station wagon designation behind to become one of the first models ever referred to as a sport utility vehicle. The original Cherokee debuted with two doors and a spacious cabin, and a four-door model came along in 1977.

Building on the Wagoneer’s family-friendly appeal, the Cherokee packaged trip-long comfort and contemporary design, and these qualities became signature features in the SUV by the debut of its second generation in 1984. During that period, other makers took note of the Cherokee’s immense popularity and began designing SUVs of their own. Even with the increasing market competition, the Cherokee remained a popular choice among American drivers.

Jeep later used the Cherokee as the basis for another SUV, the Grand Cherokee. The standard Cherokee was briefly rebranded as the Jeep Liberty though the 2000s, but returned to its original nameplate in 2014. By that time, the SUV had also been equipped with modern technology like satellite radio, traction control, and a navigation system.
