Know Your Buttercream Frostings

Who doesn’t have a sweet tooth? We know we do, although, our all-time favorite treat has to be cupcakes with buttercream frosting. Rich, creamy, and all things sweet, you can’t go wrong with a bite of icing. However, buttercream is far more complex than you can ever imagine, including five different kinds: Swiss, Italian, French, American, and Flour. Let’s shape up your buttercream knowledge!
Swiss Buttercream
Are you a beginner? The Swiss meringue Buttercream may interest you, as it is fairly easy to make. First, you’ll begin by whisking together egg whites and sugar over hot water. Also, if you are into pipe decorations and firm shapes on your cupcakes or cakes, the Swiss is completely reliable to hold its own. Give this one a try!
Italian Buttercream
Also meringue-based, this Italia buttercream is similar to the Swiss in many ways. This recipe too begins with beating egg whites, although, you’ll mix it with a hot sugar syrup twist. This icing will be a little fluffier than the Swiss. Also, if you are looking to serve your sweet treat outside during the spring or summer, the Italian buttercream can take the heat.
French Buttercream
This French edition is sure to please. With this recipe, you’ll be using the entire egg plus sugar for a delicious, rich buttercream. Although, if you are looking for a white-colored finish, this buttercream may not be the one for you, as it tends to have a yellow tint. If you want a soft and rich texture, you’re in luck because this icing combination is spectacular.
American Buttercream
Although some may argue this buttercream isn’t the real deal, we beg to differ. Packed with softened butter, this icing is sure to melt in your mouth. This recipe is especially easy to make, and the combination of butter and confectioner’s sugar can please any crowd. However, whipped cream frosting is also an even simpler alternative.

Flour Buttercream
You’re going to need a multitude of ingredients for this one: flour, cream, milk, and sugar. Also at the end, you’ll need butter to whip things up. That’s right, this recipe doesn’t contain any eggs. If you are looking for a lighter buttercream, the Flour buttercream frosting may be the one for you. Although, make sure you plan ahead with this one because it has to sit at room temperature for a while.
