Things To Consider As You Begin Composting

Composting is on the rise, and it’s no wonder why when you start to research the benefits. Have you been thinking about starting your own composting pile at home? It’s good for the soil, good for the environment, and good for the landfills. It’s truly a win-win-win! We’ve got a few tips for beginners to make sure you succeed with your compost pile, so keep reading to learn more about this amazing idea.
Why Do It
The first reason why you should consider this is because it’ll be beneficial to you. You already throw these things out, so by adding one extra step you’re allowing for the organisms in the compost to defend against plant disease. Also, it’s a much better solution than chemical fertilizers. Not to mention the fact that composting illuminates the need for those items to head to a landfill, taking up less space and ensuring landfills last longer.
What To Add To It
There are so many things you can put into your compost pile that will break down. A good way to know if something is compatible is to know if it contains carbon or nitrogen. A compost pile that is considered healthy has more carbon. Let’s look at a few good candidates for composting:
- Fruit scraps
- Veggie scraps
- Flowers (be sure to chop any stems)
- Crushed eggshells
- Chopped up corn cobs
- Coffee and filters
- Tea leaves
- Wood chips; sparingly

What Not To Do
There’s a handful of things you’re going to want to make sure you don’t throw in the pile. For starters, make sure you never throw in any meat, fish, or bones (the only exception to this is if you have a system designed for this). Next, any fruit peels like banana peels, peach peels, or orange rinds should be avoided as well. The last few things might seem random, but manures, weeds, diseased plants, or anything like that should not be included.
Now that you know a little bit more about it, are you ready to get started? You’ll be making your life easier and helping out the planet all at the same time. Happy composting!
